Launching Hut Culture: an English podcast on mountain huts as living socio‑ecological systems
Primary tabs

Hut Culture is a new English podcast channel that tells evidence‑based stories of mountain huts for a global audience—places where environmental management meets lived experience, and where hospitality becomes a practice of care, limits, and responsibility.
Where it comes from: a long research trajectory (not a one‑off project)
This podcast grows out of an extended research path on mountain huts developed over almost three decades: huts observed not as isolated buildings, but as living systems where logistics, resources, rules of coexistence, and ties to the valley become visible in everyday practice. That long‑term lens—central to CRESTA’s work—shapes the series’ tone: narrative‑argumentative, accessible, but rigorous.
Why a podcast (and why now)
Mountain huts compress major sustainability challenges into one tangible microcosm: water and energy trade‑offs, waste and wastewater constraints, safety and seasonality, changing demand patterns, and climate adaptation. Turning verified evidence into clear public storytelling helps visitors, local communities, and mountain regions—without reducing huts to postcard scenery.
The method: evidence‑based stories built with care
Episodes are produced within the Tourism Eco‑Management course (University of Turin), coordinated by Prof. Riccardo Beltramo. Student teams work through a structured workflow: desk research, a light, manager‑friendly questionnaire, and—where possible—a short interview conducted ethically (consent, quote permission, careful data handling). The result is a 25‑minute deep‑dive on a single hut, designed to balance rigor and listener engagement.
What listeners can expect
Each episode treats the hut as a socio‑ecological system: an interweaving of materials and micro‑spaces, gentle rules, daily operational choices, local food cultures, and perceptual microclimates (light, sound, views). The core question is cultural as much as operational: what makes a “refuge” a refuge today—when comfort expectations grow and the meaning of the word risks dilution?
About the 19 May event: a shared moment of visibility
The 19 May (5:30–6:30 pm) presentation at the School of Management (SAA, Turin) will officially introduce the Hut Culture initiative and will also be an opportunity to communicate and discuss the results of the UNITA Starting Grant project “Observatory on Tourism in Mountain Refuges”, developed through an international collaboration (University of Turin, University of Zaragoza/ETUZ, Transilvania University of Brașov). The Starting Grant is aligned with the broader direction of the programme and offers a valuable context for dialogue, while the podcast itself is rooted in the longer CRESTA research trajectory on huts.
